South Pacific Islands

Larry Low

Centuries before Europeans had ventured down the coast of the Dark Continent, Polynesian sailors, following the dictates of a legend and using a map devised of sticks and string, had ventured east from Bora Bora and Fatu Hiva to land, it is believed, on the Big Island now known as Hawaii. Somewhat earlier, Melanesian settlers had begun to people the islands of the Fiji Group, the New Hebrides and the Solomons. Meanwhile, the people of what is now known as Micronesia, were living a precarious existence on atolls, the lagoons of which abound in sea creatures. Today, many of the inhabitants of the islands of the Pacific are embracing technology using advanced techniques to give new meaning to old industries such as the copra industry, introduced by the likes of Palmolive, to extract oil from the coconut palms.
