Sculpture

Sculpture is art in 3 dimensions. More than classical Roman and Greek statues, sculpture includes all 3-D works, from the terracotta warriors of China to Calder's mobiles.

Sculptors, using tools often as simple as hammer and chisel, and sculpture techniques from modeling to stacking, have a wide range of resources. Sculpting materials include wood, clay, bronze, stone, concrete, resins, plastics and found objects. Temporary materials include sand, ice, butter and cheese. Sculpture types include reliefs, statues, busts, miniatures, mobiles and types not often thought of as sculpture, such as furniture and buildings. When does the art exceed the form?

Whatever the style, representational, abstract or whimsical, sculpture is an art that can stand on its own.
