Religious Persecution
To persecute an individual or group means to oppress, maltreat or harrass them because of their race, religion, culture, lifestyle or gender. Religious persecution is especially sinister - as well as being mistreated for a belief, a person or group can equally be mistreated for the absence of a religious belief or affiliation. The repression of certain groups and subcultures has been repeated over and over throughout our history. Because religion is so closely allied to culture and, therefore, morals, the resulting bigotry has contributed to appalling violence and misery.
