A Child's Home
Traute Klein, one of my fellow Suite 101 editors, fights for peace. She knows all too well the effects of war. When she was a child, her world was shattered by World War II. It didn't matter which side she was on, her family was one of many innocent families who suffered. Read her story and understand why we should join Traute in her fight for peace.

War and Responsibilty: Ferguson's PITY OF WAR (book review)
Niall Ferguson's latest book THE PITY OF WAR has caused a firestorm of controversy among academics and others and has profoundly affected the debate about World War I. "The A.J.P. Taylor" of his generation, Ferguson's book is fun, historically entertaining and interesting, as well as extremely controversial and often wrong. This extended essay offers a thorough synopsis of the author's arguments as well as my assessment of the book.

World War II
There wasn't a week that went by when I was growing up during which there wasn't a movie about World War II. This was back in the one channel universe, late seventies early eighties. Many American movies, but a large number of French movies too, even comedies based in WW II. Was this onslaught of World War II subject material necessary therapy for the collective consciousness of my country? Or was it something else?

Service (Remembrance Day 2001)
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the warring nations of Europe agreed to lay down their arms. The date for the armistice was chosen as it represented Old November Day, the "Day of the Dead" or "All Saints / All Hallows / All Souls" Day on the "old calendar," when loved ones who were gone were remembered and graveyards were tended. In this year 2001, let us again remember, and come together in ritual, in symbol, in music, to reaffirm our connections as part of the continent, part of the main, part of humanity. "Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind." (John Donne, Meditation XVII)
