III-9 Behar Support Your Local Neighbor
Behar institutes the Sabbatical and Jubilee Years, respectively the seventh and fiftieth years. Six years the Israelites may tend their fields and vineyards, but the seventh the land lays fallow. The harvest is left to the poor and needy, but not gathered for commerical means. The Jubilee year falls on the seventh interval of Sabbatical Years (7 x 7 + 1) on the eighth year. Eight is the number of redemption, dedication and renewal. Brit milah/circumscision is made on the Eighth Day. The Metzora is purified on the Eighth Day just as the dedication of the temple and consecration of Aaron's sons happened on the Eighth day. During the Eighth, properties are returned to original owners and debts absolved. Indentured servants are freed.

Folks may think bartering is a dead art in most places of the modern world. That is far from being true. Bartering is still practiced daily all through our country both in and outside the cities. You have probably practiced the art of bartering and didn't even know it.

Giving and Thanks To Our Neighbors With Love
I know that in my own struggle, and within the struggles of those I know around me, I am still extremely blessed to have what I know many may not. Unfortunately when I was going to school, I remembered making cut-outs of turkeys and pilgrims. I decorated feathered turkeys with what I was “thankful” for, dried apples and however, nothing that I did at school, or learned from my parents ever taught me the true unseen miracle and grace of being thankful. Here is what I have learned so far. Whether you have much to give and share, or little even for yourself, I have some ideas that I hope will help you for the holiday and every day.

Host a Cooperative Garage Sale
Spring cleaning is my annual thing I do to get my stuff under control. But what to do with all that stuff? A ritual I’ve picked up from my folks is to throw an annual yard/garage sale to try and peddle off the things you don’t want and make a bit of handy cash (meanwhile, keeping from being wasteful and filling up bins with usable, good things).
