Once your child is familiar with the basic vowel sounds, tackle more complex spelling by teaching him or her to identify vowel consonant clusters that occur regularly.
Get the child to understand alphabet cluster patterns in spelling, and he has an important tool that will greatly improve his spelling abilities.
After basic vowel sounds, teach a child to recognize vowel-consonant cluster patterns. Begin with sound clusters that use the vowel "a", as in the "VCe pattern".
When teaching spelling, break up the "u" sound into two sessions for easier retention. Teach the simple "u" sound first. Then, move on to more complex combinations.
When teaching spelling, start with short vowel sounds, then move to vowel diagraphs. Take one sound at a time. The long "ee", the long "a", and here, the long "i" sound.
Learning spelling is much easier if the child can recognize alphabet clusters, especially vowel-consonant clusters that repeat frequently and make similar sounds.
