Gerigio, Otherworldly Protector of St. John Bosco
St. John Bosco was the founder of the Silesian Order and is also remembered for his work with homeless and underprivileged boys in Turin, Italy. What is not well known about him is that he had a canine protector who kept him safe from danger in the Valdocco quarter of the city. The dog first appeared in 1852 and last appeared in 1883. The dog was a large grey wolf like animal. Dogs do not live for thirty-one years. The animal was named Gerigio because of his grey color. He was seen as far as 100 miles from Turin. The animal did not eat nor did he drink. He would appear only as Don Bosco’s protector. It was unknown where he came from or where he went after he was the priest’s guardian.
