A New 2001 Oscar Contender
With so many films being pulled from 2001 after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, a new film, a true military story at that, is moved up to this year to qualify for the 74th Annual Oscars. Will a war-weary nation accept such a film? And this week, there's still rumors that Oscar 74 will not take place ... my update and opinion this week.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose/Anneliese Michel: Demonic Possession or Psychosis
I have not seen the movie the Exorcism of Emily Rose, nor do I intend to see it until it comes on television. I watched The Exorcist when it was on TV. I had already read the condensed version of the book in Cosmopolitan. When these movies are on TV, it is free. I chose not to waste money on sensationalistic fiction. When I see “based on a true story,” my conclusion is that the story is greatly exaggerated for the purpose of making money by adding thrills that have no basis in reality. This was in the early 1980s. I had read Father John J. Nicola’s “Diabolical Possession and Exorcism.” I had yet read Malachi Martin’s “Hostage to the Devil.” (I will admit that one of my favorite authors is Stephen King. The scariest book I have read is his “It.” Scariest movie, “The Night of the Living Dead.” I know these are fiction, but, oh, the thrills!) When I was younger, I did not believe in demons or devils or possession. Now, after much research, I am not so sure…. I had read, years ago, when I was in college to earn my undergraduate degree, that there were cases of mentally ill people in institutions who, when a priest walked by, exhibited signs of possession. In my youth, I put this to mental illness. Possession, a form of mental illness or another reality?
