Tenant-Landlord Conflict: Goffman’s Interaction Ritual Applied (I of III)
Thanks to a recent neighborhood drama that unfolded right before my eyes, I had the opportunity to view up close what anthropologist and sociologist Erving Goffman would have called a character contest between a local tenant and landlord. As Goffman notes in his essay, Where the action is, the character contest is “a special kind of moral game” (1967, p. 240) because it is concerned with discrediting the adversary while at the same time gathering evidence in support of one’s own strength or goodness of character.

Tenant-Landlord Conflict: Goffman’s Interaction Ritual Applied (II of III)
Goffman observes that “to establish an individual in a subordinate status, an aggressor may coerce him into openly performing an undignified obeisance or service on the assumption that once he allows himself to give in he can (and he knows he can) be relied upon henceforth to accede to any demand made of him.” (p. 255). Since she had not yet succeeded in eliciting a satisfying display of subservience from him, Wendy continued to push the landlord further, first by demanding that he recognize the property to be of diminished quality and then by requesting that he demonstrate this fact to another witness: his brother, the owner of the building.

Tenant-Landlord Conflict: Goffman’s Interaction Ritual Applied (III of III)
At that point Wendy brought up the issue of rent abatement – Mr. Jarlson had verbally agreed to give her the last month’s rent free because of building conditions. For the first time, he turned his eyes on Wendy and opened them as if in surprise and outrage. Mr. Jarlson denied that he had ever made this offer and said that this would have been something that he would have offered to people who moved out early. Wendy reiterated that the agreement was not contingent on early move out, but due to reduced security, cleanliness, utilities, and inconvenience since they took over ownership. Again, he denied that this was the case.
