STIGMA: A RODEO, BOO RADLEY AND ME
This article centers around the heartbreak of stigma towards those who suffer from mental illness. It shows one woman's journey from laughing at hospital clients at a rodeo to becoming an activist against stigma. "That. . .a culture which has put a man on the moon. . . advanced so much technologically. . .could still treat the mentally ill this way."

STIGMA: APPROACHING WELLNESS IN SPITE OF IT ALL
Many mental health consumers have witnessed a barrage of news stories and dramas depicting mental illness in an unfavorable light over the past month or so. Because these shows were frightening to many viewers, stigma seems to be on the increase in the aftermath. What can we do? We can try to change it--but by proving those who stigmatize wrong. In groups, we might choose to start a bipolar band or direct or act in a bipolar play. We may even start a bipolar softball team. But as individuals, we can make a far greater contribution. Read about some current trends in mental health policy and then learn the importance of looking towards wellness by reading how one nurse found her own path toward balance and was able to reach her potential. By striving toward less extreme behavior, we can better steer clear of the mental health and criminal justice systems, and at the same time, rebuild our lives through healthy habits, taking meds, avoiding alcohol, caffeine and drugs, and taking advantage of social skills and illness and behavioral management resources.

There's More to Vervain than Anthers and Stigma
Field guides generally don't mention Druids or witches. They say things like, “Calyx usually tubular. Corolla salverform or funnelform. Stamens 4, didynomous.” They never get around to the bits about warding off witches, or how the devil uses an herb. It’s all anthers and stigmas with field guides.

WHAT ARE YOU, NUTS? (or: One of Those People)
Dominique Millette, our guest playwright, brings compassion and understanding of how stigma can hurt those with brain disorder. Her perspective echoes the words of many who have been stigmatized by others. Her wish is that those who interact with those diagnosed with mental illness will recognize this wake-up call to end stigma. Though seen through a glass darkly, this one-act, one-woman play hammers home the unfortunate stereotypes accompanying bipolar disorder. She touches on loneliness, forsaken dreams, relationships with family and friends, and the unforgettable injunctions that her bipolar is only a matter of willpower or not trying. Bipolars and others with mental illness, significant others, teachers, clergy and physicians, and, hopefully, the general public will be touched by Millett's plea for acceptance and support. A kaleidoscope of attitude, anger, futility, and wry humor, What Are You, Nuts? Or: One Of Those People makes a strong--and necessary statement.

Wildflower Terminology (With Apologies)
Calyx. What in the world is a calyx? And glabrous? Is that a Star Wars character? What about peduncle? Is that when you’re older than your mother‘s brother? Sadly, these are terms associated with wildflowers, and I would be remiss in my attempts at sharing these bits of botany if I didn’t spend a little time on them. I apologize in advance...or two paragraphs in, anyway. I’ll dwell on some of the basic lingo only, which, in itself, may be cause for an aspirin or two.
