Getting Ready for the Camp Cooking
December is the low point in my annual quest to replicate my last camping trip to the Alpine country of California's Sierra Nevada range. Like many areas in the United States and Canada, a blanket of snow covers campgrounds. It's winter. Everything's frozen. In many places -- especially at Woods Lake, near Carson Pass -- the snow drifts engulfs all of the good campsites.

Microclimates
Many world-renowned gardens utilize both natural and manipulated microclimates to achieve drama and beauty. Designers of Sissinghurst Castle Gardens in Kent, England and Butterstream Gardens, in County Meath, The Irish Republic exploited existing structures like old brick walls and buildings along with natural influences such as compass direction, water, and large trees. The Isle of Wight surrounded by waters of the Solent is a "working example" of bodies of water influencing a regional or neighborhood microclimate.

Broad Leafed Evergreens - Pieris
One of my favorite broad-leafed evergreens, Pieris or often mistakenly called Andromeda, is perfect for the shady garden. A member of the Ericaceae and closely related to Rhododendrons, it thrives in the same kind of moist, organic, acid soil.

Broad Leafed Evergreens - Boxwood
The term ‘broad leafed’ doesn’t really mean large leaves. It just differentiates between needled evergreens and those with leaves. Boxwood (Buxus) has been associated with formal gardens for centuries.

Broad Leafed Evergreens - Rhododendrons & Azaleas
If the Rhododendron is King of the broad-leafed evergreens, then the Azalea is Queen. While I do have something blooming all season, there is nothing like the concentrated flower-power of the "Rhodies" and Azaleas in May. Actually, both are Rhododendrons and members of the ericaceae family like heaths and heathers.
