Guided Reading Resources
A number of states have moved toward including guided reading in their
overall picture of quality reading instruction and teachers are always
searching for resources that summarize the components of these important
reading lessons. As summer gets under way and you get a few minutes to
take a breather from the hectic life in a classroom, I hope you enjoy this
month's article, which features many excellent web sites created to help
teachers effectively use guided reading strategies.

Literacy Instruction for ESL Learners
At a recent workshop, I had an ESL teacher quite franctically inquire about the lack of online resources available for students who were learning English for the first time. I decided to take a look myself, and found quite the opposite to be true. At the risk of overwhelming teachers with too many resources, I've decided to go ahead and post this article with the warning that indeed, this list is quite large and goes in many different directions. I thought I'd share this list as a starting place for teachers while I gather my thoughts and prepare for a more concise list of annotated resources a few months down the road.

The Reading Wars Briefly Revisited
As promised, this month is the second in a three part series about Reading
Research and Best Practices. This month, we'll explore the opposing perspectives
of quality reading instruction and learn more about some of the key players
on both sides. In its simplest of terms, the battle lines are drawn
between advocates of phonics, who stress the importance of teaching relationships
between letters and sounds, and those of whole-language methodology, who
believe children should be taught reading whole texts. Unfortunately,
the reality of this battle is anything but simple.

Using the Think-Aloud in Reading Instruction

As a member of the RTEACHER
listserv, I've noticed many recent questions about the use of a process
known as "Thinking-Aloud" during reading instruction. This concept
has caught the attention of many elementary and middle school teachers
who are asking questions like...What is a think-aloud?...When do I model
the use of this think-aloud behavior? For those teachers that break
their reading instruction down into different segments, you may find yourself
asking questions like...do I interrupt my regular read-aloud time (when
my students are listening pure enjoyment) or do I use this more during
shared or guided reading time? Others are wondering...can I expect
my students to also think-aloud or is this just something I continue to
model as a strategy that good readers (or listeners) use as they interact
with text? These and other good questions have inspired me to focus
this month's issue on locating relevant online resources that may assist
teachers seeking answers for how to effectively use think-aloud strategies
in their reading instruction.

Balanced Literacy
Even in the last few months, more and more Internet web sites have been developed to assist teachers in their attempts to integrate the elements of a "balanced literacy approach" into reading instruction. The following is a listing of some of the more useful resources.

Current Research-Based Reading Documents
For many classroom teachers, access to current research-based practices has proven difficult since many have limited funds
available to subscribe to reading research journals and limited time or resources available to locate the most current research
documents about effective reading practices. So, I've decided to dedicate the next three months to a series about Reading
Research and Best Practices so that readers may use this summer to brush up on these topics and be best prepared to deal
with them when students return to their classrooms in the fall. It is my hope that this series will provide easy access to many
current sources of scientifically-based reading research, as well as a bit about the history and current politics associated with
reading instruction and the ongoing Reading Wars. This month, I'll highlight important research-based reading documents
published in the past four years and point you in directions to learn more about specific reading reports.

Peer Teaching and Reading
Peer teaching involves one or more students teaching other students
in a particular subject area. There is much support in the literature
for incorporating peer teaching techniques into reading instruction.
This month, we'll take a look at how educators define and structure peer
tutoring sessions within reading instruction, learn about the advantages
of its use, and explore some online resources about peer teaching and reading.

Using Picture Books with Middle and High School Students
If you've recently visited a children's bookstore, you may have noticed that more and more picture books are being created and many, with older children in mind. The text and illustrations are more complex and challenging and many picture books deal with themes that reflect issues appropriate for discussion with upper elementary, middle school and even high school readers. This month's article will focus on this trend in children's literature and how "picture books" can be effectively used with older students to enhance many different aspects of learning.
