Snowman, Snowman -- What Do You Hear?
Young children, even those who have not learned how to read or write yet, love to "read" pattern books. In this activity, we create a pattern e-book based on the pattern sequences in Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr.'s books, "Polar Bear, Polar Bear What do you hear?" and "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see?"

Early Literacy Resources for Children with Disabilities
As this year comes to a close, I'd like to call your attention to a group of students for whom, until recently, learning how to read had not been a priority. David A. Koppenhaver wrote in 1991 that "It's not easy trying to learn to read and write if you're a child with severe disabilities in U.S. public school today. In fact, you have at best a 30% chance of being able to read and write as well as a child who can walk and talk but is otherwise just the same as you." After doing a bit of research, however, it seems that fortunately, much progress has been made in this area since this article was published in 1995. New perspectives on emergent literacy and good instructional practices for all children, including those with disabilities, are now available online for both parents and teachers to access, as well as numerous other resources about the types of assistive technology that foster reading and writing skills.

Interactive E-Books for Children
There are literally thousands of examples of interactive books for children now available online and for purchase offline. The purpose of this article is to help provide an overview of the many forms that interactive books can take, including those that use electronic features like hypertext, animation, audio, video, online coloring, quizzing and progress keeping. I personally don't think that the joy of paging through a "real book" will ever be replaced by the newer formats of text that have recently emerged. However, there are certainly some notable features that should at least be recognized as indications that the common concept of "book" will never again be limited to static words on a page. This article is not intended to be an exhaustive list of links to electronic books for children as much as a sampling of the range of books available from fairly static reprints to heavily interactive user controlled texts.
