It was built in the 1300s and is the ancestral home of the Lords of Strathmore. According to legend, Macbeth murdered Duncan in this castle, and his ghost is said to haunt the edifice. Unquiet Coffins There have been cases of coffins being tossed about in crypts. The most well known case is that of the Chase crypt in Barbados which happened from 1812 to 1820. The earliest record I could locate was that of the French Crypt, Stanton, Suffolk, England, 1810. In 1844, there was another case, the Buxhoewden Crypt on the Island of Oesel in the Baltic Sea. Various explanations have been offered including a minor earthquake, subterranean streams, grave robbers and electro magnetic theory. Even minor earthquakes are felt and the way the coffins are placed is logical argument evidence against this theory. There, in these cases, is no evidence of water in the crypts. The locks showed no evidence as having been tampered with and two of the crypts were sealed and the floors dusted with sand or ashes that were not disturbed. The coffins in the Chase grave were made of lead. Apparently the ones in the Buxhoewden crypt were made of wood because some were battered open. Is it possible that electromagnetic forces could toss lead coffins about? Why was nothing else in the area affected? Could these forces toss wood coffins about? paranormal • moving coffins • barbados • oesel • chase

The Documented Case The Exorcist was Based On The year was 1949. William Peter Blatty was a student at Georgetown University. The case was reported in the newspapers. Demonic possession in 1949? The afflicted was a 13 ½ year old boy. The early accounts called him “Roland Doe,” while later accounts gave him the name of “Douglass Deene.” Blatty read and Associated Press account of the case in the Washington Post, then did extensive research. Twenty years later, when he wrote his book, he changed so many of the details that it bears little resemblance to the actual case. The boy’s symptoms followed the classic stages of possession and J. B. Rhine, one of the founders of modern parapsychology was consulted. Finally, the boy was sent to St. Louis and exorcized at least twenty times. There are two books I used as references for this article which are cited at the end of the article. One was written by Rosemary Ellen Guiley and the other by Colin Wilson. Because of one glaring mistake I have problems with the Wilson book, which will be addressed in the article. paranormal • demonic possession • exorcism • william peter blatty • the exorcist
