Once here, she befriended a tribe of Indians and continued portraying herself as a boy. Before the ship was to leave to go back to its homeport, she became sick with a raging fever. Her identity became known. Her last request before she died was to be carried to the top of her beloved mountain. She is believed to have been buried there and thus the Mountain became known as Petit Jean Mountain.
