Wildflowers At 70 MPH: New Mexico
With the spirit of Jack Kerouac never far from the surface, my wife and I jumped all over the opportunity to return to California. Across the bottom of Mississippi, up through Louisiana and into Texas, highways were lined with sunflowers, varieties of goldenrod, Mistflower, and golden asters. And once we got into Oklahoma the most abundant wildflower was Maximilian Sunflower, a gorgeous species top heavy with blossoms. Such variety and abundance surprised me. After such bounty, I thought, New Mexico would surely be a barren, dusty landscape. After all, it was October. What else could possibly be blooming? Lots. Lots and lots.

Checkout Never Comes
Route 66, that fabled American highway, both boomed and faded from use during the Cold War era, but remains a powerful symbol of this country's restless spirt that began over well over 200 years ago and continues even today. And along Route 66 are many relics of a time long gone but not forgotten. Tucumcari is one such relic, a ghost town slowly vanishing into the desert, but full of revenants both corperal and physical.

My Encounter With Shiprock Peak -- The Gothic Cathedral on the Prairie
While crossing the prairie in northwestern New Mexico, far in the distance, the faint outline of a brooding volcanic pinnacle began to take shape. This was my first view of Shiprock -- the spectacular, 1,700-foot-high remains of an ancient volcano.
