THE SO-CALLED COMMON DOILY
During the nineteenth century sometime, a London haberdasher by the name of D'Oyley thought about building some extra profit for his lagging business. His "brainstorm" was the idea of selling small but fancy bits of linen cloth, edged with different types of laces, to place under vases or bowls and on top of tables. Or as Mr. D'Oyley smugly remarked, "anywhere my lovely Victorian ladies would want to further clutter-up their homes."
