Arles, Ste Maries de la Mer and the Camargue Pt 9 Arles is a festival city of culture and art. It houses historic, well preserved ruins and beautiful 16th and 17th century mansions, that meld into the modern cityscape. The narrow winding streets are medieval in flavor and add to the historic sense of the place. Many famous artists, Van Gogh, Picasso and Gaugain lived here and produce a prolific amount of work. The Camargue is a unique area of farmland, marshes, small canals, rice paddies, salt marshes and green fields with grazing black bulls and white horses. It is also a nature preserve that abounds with wildife and birds. The Carague Guardians , (cowboys) give the area a western flair, so it is often called the Texas of France. Ste. Maries de la Mer, looks like a California beach town, but has an ancient legend that it's inception included saints, three of them named Marie who came out of the sea. This was indeed an interesting journey! arles • camargue • ste. maries de la mer • roman ruins • amphitheatre
