Motivating Middle and High School Readers with Booktalks:
I recently attended a Booktalk with my second grade daughter at ourlocal library and was absolutely amazed at how perceptive young children are and how excited they can get about talking about books! Almost twenty five people were present, and most people did not know each other, yet within minutes, children and adults were excitedly answering questions about the stories generated by the group leader, and sharing personal experiences similar to those of the main characters; experiences
with feelings like courage, determination, dreams, faith, confidence, and encouragement. As I drove home with my daughter, I was inspired to share this experience
with others. If all this could happen with a group of elementary
school students who don't even know each other, imagine what potential lies within the circles of middle and high school students, even among those who are not particularly strong readers!
