Terror on the Mississippi: The Sultana Disaster, Part I
In the early morning hours of April 27th, 1865, the greatest maritime disaster in American history took place on the Mississippi River. Despite a loss of life exceeding even the Titanic disaster, few people today know about it. Guest-author Curtis Payne tells us about this often overlooked tragedy.

A Key Port
If the Union forces were going to be successful in defeating the Confederacy, they needed to seize the Mississippi River in order to cut the South into two. In order to achieve this goal, the port of New Orleans had to be captured. New Orleans was the South’s largest city and busiest port. To capture the city would be no easy matter.

Curse of the Evil Witch of Yazoo City
In 1904, there was a fire that devastated Yazoo City, Mississippi. It is said that a hideous old woman who died in 1884 came back from the grave and caused the blaze. Her grave, surrounded by chain links, is located in Glenwood Cemetery. The city and its river were named after the Yazoo Indians, a tribe local to the region. There are those that aver that Yazoo means “death” in the long forgotten language. Could it be that Yazoo is Death City and its river is Death River, and could the witch have played a role in the fire?
