Swapping Stories
Books surrounded me as a child and life will not be much different for my daughter in this respect. As anyone who has ever helped me move is acutely aware of, I have pretty much saved every book I have ever owned. It’s a great comfort to me to know that I can return to any one of them in the dead of night and be certain of finding the reference I need.

Literacy Instruction for ESL Learners
At a recent workshop, I had an ESL teacher quite franctically inquire about the lack of online resources available for students who were learning English for the first time. I decided to take a look myself, and found quite the opposite to be true. At the risk of overwhelming teachers with too many resources, I've decided to go ahead and post this article with the warning that indeed, this list is quite large and goes in many different directions. I thought I'd share this list as a starting place for teachers while I gather my thoughts and prepare for a more concise list of annotated resources a few months down the road.

Reciprocal Teaching: Support for Struggling Older Readers
I have decided to change my focus for the next few months by addressing issues and reading strategies more relevant for teachers of secondary students. A recent article entitled Before It's Too Late: Giving Reading A Last Chance provides a wonderful starting point for an investigation into supportive online resources for secondary school teachers trying to "beef up students' reading abilities". The article's author, Rick Allen, describes some of the most successful reading comprehension strategies for secondary students as those that are "woven into larger learning frameworks that attempt to meet students' needs on an academic and personal level." One particularly exciting reading program described in Allen's article is called Academic Literacy.
