John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) This month guest author Mark W. Swarthout, contributing editor of a North American Genealogical History site and I exchanged articles. His first book, <I>The Hobbit,</I> was published in 1937 and was eventually followed by <I>The Lord of the Rings,</I> a series of five books published in three volumes. Within these pages, Tolkien's love of trees is a key element, as is his fear of spiders.
