Command Hallucinations
Command hallucinations are often thought to be the most serious. My friends and I "had to" do a lot of weird things, which we may laugh about now, but isn't there an implicit command in "having to do something"?

Deceptions of the Mind - #3 of From Hallucination to Hallelujah
This is the third in the series about after-effects of surgery. If this is your first time here, go back and read the last two weeks articles to find out what led up to this point. This series is an attempt to help people know one possible consequence which can occur as a result of a reaction to anesthetic. As I said before, if we had been forewarned that this was a possibility, it would have been much less stressful for all concerned. I know I could have reacted differently, even in my delirium, if the possibility had been stored in my subconcious.

Hallucination and Saving Grace
If you've never had a hallucination, it's very hard to realize just what they are. The person who is caught in this state has no way of knowing that the people and places he interacts with are all in his mind. Some people and acts insinuate themselves into the hallucination, and the patient can't distinguish the real from the hallucinatory. That's why it sometimes appears to nurses and family that the patient seems to somehow connect with you, and then suddenly, his mind is off somewhere else. The patient may recognize that you are there, but can't separate his "mental story" from the nurses' reality. This series of articles on anesthesia-induced hallucination and delusion are meant to enlighten future patients and their families to the false but seemingly real world of the hallucinating patients mind.

Secret Wonderings after Surgery
Are you or someone close to you going to have surgery in the next few months? Have you been told what might be expected both before and AFTER the operation? Being told what will happen before and during the surgery is expected and usually does occur. However, what might happen after you come out of recovery could be a huge shock to you and especially to your family. I had a severe reaction to medications and the anesthetic used in my last back surgery and was hallucinatory for 10 days. I was lost in a world that seemed as real as this one, and my family was terrified that I would never return. I'm writing about this experience in this, and several subsequent articles, in order to inform you and others to insist on knowing BEFOREHAND what possibilities, no matter how remote, you could encounter after the operating room. I'm sure my family and myself, could have reacted much differently and with less terror if we had been told of this remote possibility. I hope you'll read these articles and be better prepared to deal with reality and the world of hallucinations, if you are ever called to visit there.

Dangers of Postpartum Psychosis
RoseMeade takes a look at the characteristics of parents with postpartum psychosis. We study parents that have reached the point of taking the life of their own children. The Andrea Yates case is reflected upon in order to cover some of the early warning signs. We look deeper into the phenomena and help others do the same so that the lives of young children can possibly be saved by earlier detection of the mental state of the parent.

Another Wild Night
Being transferred to a new place seemed to enhance the depth of dilusion and increased the instances of wild experiences. Even to this day, when I recall these periods of hallucination, they seem as real as what I did yesterday. It's quite strange to realize that what we may perceive as real is not always as it seems. Being aware that hallucination is a possibility which accompanies surgery is an important thing to realize. It's much easier to handle when you're prepared.

He's Not Dead
Thinking in my delirium that Sonny, my husband, had been killed, I am shocked to find out he's alive. In Fear and Trembling
This article continues with the post surgery hallucination story and though it's not particularly about herbs, it's very important information. I'll continue after completing this series to tell you about the herbs I've found which have helped me to heal after this stressful physical period. Even when I began to realize that much of what I thought I'd experienced after surgery was hallucinatory, I still had long periods of delusion. Finally however, I was becoming able to sort it out and use my reason and understand finally what was real and what wasn't. Being prepared ahead of time for this possibility would have saved myself and my family much anquish. That's the purpose of this series of articles. To inform people facing surgery of this possibility.

Initiation
During this part of my delusions, I tried to pull out the central line that had been put into a vein in my neck. I have very difficult veins and they soon refused to give any more blood, so shortly after the operation, the central line was put in to make it easier on me, and everyone else, when blood had to be drawn. In my hallucination, during the middle of the night, I tried to pull it out, thinking it was a "pin" and the hospital had to call my husband in to calm me down. It was really a wild experience!

The Transfer
Not all hallucinations are terrifying. Some are very uplifting and leave a lasting and profound impression on your life. I was given a beautiful vision of beauty that I can still recall. Static Change
Yet another "tale from the hallucinating mind". Static Change shows how fleeting and changing the mind of the affected person can be while the family sees no change in their condition and even sometimes thinks it may be worse. These experiences were very real to me at the time. My family and I think the whole ten day ordeal would have been much easier on all of us if we'd been able to read something like this before it all happened to us. Hallucinations may be all in the mind, but whether caused by a reaction to anesthesia, as in my case, or by some other factor, they are definitely very real to the hallucinating person.
