Psychological knowledge provides a number of thought provoking views on this current controversy. This paper provides a cost-benefit analysis of psychological suffering surrounding euthanasia and chronic illness, including recommendations of how the legalization of euthanasia could alleviate a number of these issues. The role of psychological evaluations as a follow up to requests for euthanasia is discussed. The application of a psychological autopsy to mercy killing cases is proposed.
