The Exorcism of Emily Rose/Anneliese Michel: Demonic Possession or Psychosis I have not seen the movie the Exorcism of Emily Rose, nor do I intend to see it until it comes on television. I watched The Exorcist when it was on TV. I had already read the condensed version of the book in Cosmopolitan. When these movies are on TV, it is free. I chose not to waste money on sensationalistic fiction. When I see “based on a true story,” my conclusion is that the story is greatly exaggerated for the purpose of making money by adding thrills that have no basis in reality. This was in the early 1980s. I had read Father John J. Nicola’s “Diabolical Possession and Exorcism.” I had yet read Malachi Martin’s “Hostage to the Devil.” (I will admit that one of my favorite authors is Stephen King. The scariest book I have read is his “It.” Scariest movie, “The Night of the Living Dead.” I know these are fiction, but, oh, the thrills!) When I was younger, I did not believe in demons or devils or possession. Now, after much research, I am not so sure…. I had read, years ago, when I was in college to earn my undergraduate degree, that there were cases of mentally ill people in institutions who, when a priest walked by, exhibited signs of possession. In my youth, I put this to mental illness. Demonic Possession and Exorcism Demonic possession is recognized by the Catholic, Episcopal and some other churches. It is from the perspective of the Catholic Church that this article is written. There are stages of both possession and exorcism according to the Catholic Church. Exorcism is one of the rites of the Church. When there is a case of suspected possession, the Bishop of the Diocese appoints an exorcist who, then he is in total control. It is he who decides whether or not an exorcism will be performed. In 1971, Blatty wrote “The Exorcist,” which was based on a true case of possession. Father John J. Nicola was the technical advisor to the movie and wrote a book, Diabolical Possession and Exorcism. The theology of possession and exorcism are not well known by the public and he wanted to inform the public. He was concerned that there could be an epidemic of pseudo possession, possession and phobias, as was the case of Salem. The late Father Malachi Martin was an internationally known expert on possession and exorcism. These books are some of my references for this article. paranormal • demonic possession • exorcism • religion

Murder of the “Devil’s Bride:” Exorcism Gone Awry The movie, Exorcism of Emily Rose, is, allegedly, based on the true story of a young girl in Germany who died during an exorcism. Her name was Annelise, also spelled as Anneliese, Michel. I have tried to find out about the real case, and found some conflicting information, albeit it some minor, such as her age. There is the documented case of Bernadette Hasler that happened in Zurich, Switzerland in 1966. The ringleaders and primary exorcists and murderers were John Stocker and Magdalena Kohler, both Germans, who were brought to trial three years later. Dr. Hans Bender, (I have also seen his name spelled Binder), psychiatrist and highly esteemed parapsychologist director of the Institute for the Studies of Border Areas of Psychology and Psychohygiene, Frieburg University, testified at the trial. Dr. Bender is also an expert on the poltergeist. Two of the stages of demonic possession consist of poltergeist activity. There no evidence of these stages in the case of Bernadette Hasler. This case brings new insight into the power of suggestion and brainwashing in cases of alleged possession and exorcism. paranormal • exorcism • murder of bernadette hasler • psychological tecniques used in accusing the alleg • brainwashing
Luther and Baptism A piece someone sent me, dated from 1523, of a baptismal service which Luther translated into German and modified. It does indeed have the exorcism in it. This would have been written six years after the 95 Thesis (31 October 1517). While it seems long for a baptism, remember that baptsims were often done outside the church service proper. Luther speaks not of making a joke of the exorcism, but that those attending the baptism be mindful of the serious nature of sin. Luther also says, in his explanation, that many of the external elements could be left out, but he retained them for the sake of weak consciences. Maybe today it would be better to leave the exorcism OUT for the same reason. Do those who reinstate the exorcism also apply the mud and spittle? One should note the context of Luther when he did something, and often his reason. Sometimes it wasn't a Scriptural reason, but a matter of exercising Christian freedom and avoiding offense. baptism • exorcism • sin • grace • luther
The Documented Case The Exorcist was Based On The year was 1949. William Peter Blatty was a student at Georgetown University. The case was reported in the newspapers. Demonic possession in 1949? The afflicted was a 13 ½ year old boy. The early accounts called him “Roland Doe,” while later accounts gave him the name of “Douglass Deene.” Blatty read and Associated Press account of the case in the Washington Post, then did extensive research. Twenty years later, when he wrote his book, he changed so many of the details that it bears little resemblance to the actual case. The boy’s symptoms followed the classic stages of possession and J. B. Rhine, one of the founders of modern parapsychology was consulted. Finally, the boy was sent to St. Louis and exorcized at least twenty times. There are two books I used as references for this article which are cited at the end of the article. One was written by Rosemary Ellen Guiley and the other by Colin Wilson. Because of one glaring mistake I have problems with the Wilson book, which will be addressed in the article. paranormal • demonic possession • exorcism • william peter blatty • the exorcist

Multiple Personality Disorder and Demonic and Spirit Possession – Part I Multiple Personality Disorder, MPD, is now called Dissociative Identity Disorder, DID. When I took a course in abnormal psychology, it was classified as a neurosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, DSM IV TR, written by the American Psychiatric Association, is the reference book mental health professionals use to diagnose for billing purposes. The criteria for MPD is that there are two or more distinct and different identities, at least two of these take control of the person’s behavior and not being able to recall important information that is too extensive to be explained by simply forgetting. The personalities are called alters. This is not due to effects of a substance, such as blackouts or a medical condition. Could possession be a demon as one of the alters of MPD? Two eminent psychiatrists, the late M. Scott Peck and the retired Ralph Allison, have treated people with MPD and both have experienced demonic personalities during the course of treatment. Dr. Peck died Sunday, September 25, 2005 after a long illness. I first read about their work when I was writing my doctoral thesis. The topic I was working on was demonic possession and exorcism. At the time, I had no need to explore MPD further because it was beyond the scope of the thesis subject. Since then, I have acquired their books and have studied them. possession • exorcism • multiple personality disorder • mpd • dissociative identity disorder
Multiple Personality Disorder and Demonic and Spirit Possession – Part II According to theory, discarnate entity can possess the living. The pioneers in this were Dr. Carl Wickland and his wife, Anna, a medium, and Dr. Titus Bull. Continuing this work were the late Canon John D. Pearce-Higgins, psychiatrists M. Scott Peck and Ralph Allison and psychologist Edith Fiore. According to survival theory, a part of us survives the death of the physical body and is referred to as the soul, spirit, entity, discarnate and other names. Some spirits become what is termed earthbound. According to Pearce-Higgins, they just hang around here and do not go where they belong. There are ways to help them go to the light. This is releasement. Can spirits actually possess people? There is documentation for this, but no hard scientific proof. Is the phenomenon a form of mental illness? Again, the hard proof is lacking. The evidence is there that something is happening, but the actual cause is a matter of theory and belief. paranormal • spirit possession • demonic possession • multiple personality disorder or mpd • depossession
