SAMPLERS...A YOUNG GIRLS EMBROIDERY WITH GROWNUP PRICES
Many of the "samplers" were of the simplest type of embroideries. They contained letters, numbers and sometimes stylized motifs. All were made by young girls to practice both the alphabet and basic sewing techniques. What makes this piece of embroidery so popular with the antique textile collectors that at auction they sell for thousands of dollars?

HANDKERCHIEFS...SCENTED REMEMBRANCES OF LIFE
Could it be that a simple square piece of cloth that the Contessa de Melzo just happened to receive from her lover, the Duke Sforza, somewhere in the middle of the thirteenth century, in such an abundance, would start a fashion trend that would continue throughout time? Now lets fast-forward, taking that same simple square piece of cloth, that is filling the drawers of famous department stores world wide, allowing their customers to continue a fashion trend. What is it about a small square of cloth that has so bewitched humans that they decorated them with their finest embroidery and laces, passing them from generation to generation?

THE FAMILY'S HEIRLOOM CHRISTENING GOWN
With such a wonderful and rich tradition for generations, it's so unfortunate that most of the "Generation X" has this "could care less" attitude when inheriting the family's christening gown. I mention this because with my experience on recent house calls, the gown and bonnet is not wanted by the family members, so up for sale it goes! Now, I do know for a fact that there are some people that do keep this tradition going.

SO WHAT WAS THE "CRAZE" ABOUT CRAZY QUILTS?
The 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition was a big event in Victorian society. One of the most popular exhibits was the Japanese Pavilion with its fascinating crazed ceramics and asymmetrical art. Women were eager to incorporate this new look into their quilts and with the help of popular women's magazines the making of Crazy Quilts became quite the rage. This enthusiasm over Crazy quilts continued until about 1910.
