Greg Biffle was the man to beat but a blown engine spoiled his day. Tony Stewart seemed to be the only non-Roush Racing driver who may have had a shot to win, but like Biffle, his day ended due to an engine failure.

The #9 Evernham Motorsports Dodge was an already established front-runner with long-time veteran Bill Elliott behind the wheel. If you recall, no team was better than Elliott and the #9 team throughout the final ten or twelve races of 2003.
