Spectral Hounds, Legends and a True Account
The barghest, also spelled barguest is a spectral hound of English folklore, as are Black Shuck and the Whisht Hounds. According to legend, these animals are omens of death to those unfortunate enough to see them. I have written about Whisht Hounds in my article “Spectral Wild Hunts and a Cruel Huntsman.” Usually, these supernatural beings take the form of a large black dog. They are not like the mischievous, at mostly human friendly Puca which I wrote about in “A Puca Comes to Pennsylvania.” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired by the legends of the Whisht Hounds and Black Shuck when he wrote the book, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Amy Castile had an experience with a hellhound that was investigated by Morely Adams, a parapsychologist and documented. Today’s spectral animal du jour is the barghest and its kin….

Spectral Wild Hunts and a Cruel Huntsman
The wild hunt is a ghostly procession of huntsman, their horses and dogs. Its roots are in ancient Germanic/Norse mythology. It has different leaders, Odin, Holda, Bertha, Frigga and Herne, depending on the country where the hunt takes place. After the Reformation, when the belief in Purgatory was abolished, the Wild Hunt was the lot of the unbaptized dead. These people could not be buried on sacred ground and were interred in unconsecrated earth. The belief was that their spirits remained earthbound. These unfortunate souls were game for the Wild Hunt and were chased into hell by them. There have been reported sighting of this spectral phenomena with its people and ghostly animals.
