Winners and Losers Sometimes even in our delusions, we can learn some very important life lessons. My husband, Sonny, and I learned some very important ones during my days of hallucinations which were caused by the anesthetic used during my back surgery. If this is your first visit to this site, I hope you'll take the time to go back to the first of the articles on this topic. (Secret Wanderings after Surgery, July 2, 1999) There you'll find out why I'm writing these. I want to inform as many people as I can about the possibility of post-operative hallucinations caused by reactions to the anesthetic or medications. This segment is one of deep emotional growth and an important lesson which we learned. delusions • surgery • adverse reactions • anesthetics
In Fear and Trembling This article continues with the post surgery hallucination story and though it's not particularly about herbs, it's very important information. I'll continue after completing this series to tell you about the herbs I've found which have helped me to heal after this stressful physical period. Even when I began to realize that much of what I thought I'd experienced after surgery was hallucinatory, I still had long periods of delusion. Finally however, I was becoming able to sort it out and use my reason and understand finally what was real and what wasn't. Being prepared ahead of time for this possibility would have saved myself and my family much anquish. That's the purpose of this series of articles. To inform people facing surgery of this possibility. rehabilitation • hallucination • mind • delusion • surgery
Initiation During this part of my delusions, I tried to pull out the central line that had been put into a vein in my neck. I have very difficult veins and they soon refused to give any more blood, so shortly after the operation, the central line was put in to make it easier on me, and everyone else, when blood had to be drawn. In my hallucination, during the middle of the night, I tried to pull it out, thinking it was a "pin" and the hospital had to call my husband in to calm me down. It was really a wild experience! initiation • iv • blood • hallucination • delusion
Laughter: The Best Medicine Laughter is truly an aid to health and well being! Even in the midst of pain and delirium, friends who bring laughter are a very welcome prescription to coming back to health. When you don't know what to give to a friend in the hospital, or to someone suffering prolonged illness, take them a few minutes of laughter. It will work wonders! hallucination • delirium • surgery • illness • laughter
Hallucination and Saving Grace If you've never had a hallucination, it's very hard to realize just what they are. The person who is caught in this state has no way of knowing that the people and places he interacts with are all in his mind. Some people and acts insinuate themselves into the hallucination, and the patient can't distinguish the real from the hallucinatory. That's why it sometimes appears to nurses and family that the patient seems to somehow connect with you, and then suddenly, his mind is off somewhere else. The patient may recognize that you are there, but can't separate his "mental story" from the nurses' reality. This series of articles on anesthesia-induced hallucination and delusion are meant to enlighten future patients and their families to the false but seemingly real world of the hallucinating patients mind. hallucination • delusion • medication • mind • false
