Our very own little patch The ground on the south side of the house rises towards the next door neighbour's fence. The ground is gravel and we have planted trees and shrubs there. There is a circular drive pasing through this section. The whole of the block is a half acre in size and looks completely different from when we moved in some years ago. I guess we are now looking at the possibility of making it into a completely water - saving, ecologically sound piece of garden. In the winter, which is now upon us, the tendency is go forget about water saving ideas. However, in the summer, which can be really hot and dry, we always wish we had planted more natives whicxh don't require as much water as other types of plant. There are plenty of spaces left, and we never seem to run out out of ideas for replacing plants, or filling up spaces with new plants which we see, either on a visit to a garden centre, or in some friends' gardes. end John A Bottomley Copyright June 1998 approx 700 words. gardens • australia • native plants • lawn-free • gardening
