Grand Canyon Architect: Mary Jane Colter shapes the Southwest
Here I take a departure from wilderness wanderings to describe the unusual Grand Canyon architecture designed by a 1900s powerhouse of a woman. Meticulous to a fault, stubborn and intelligent, Colter used to sneak away from construction sites to chain-smoke and sketch the canyon. She visited Native American ruins to memorize the details of construction, and insisted her works be built the same way.
