The natives of Gope in the Central Kalahari are told diamonds from their land are not conflict diamonds. But is forced removal to concentration camps not conflict?
Book - Decolonising Education My name is Tyson Kaawoppa Yunkaporta. That wasn't always my name; it was given to me by my mob on Cape York. I am also related by blood to Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna people from South Australia, but that's not a place where I've ever lived before. Right now I'm living and working in Western NSW, where I am an Aboriginal Education consultant. I work on Aboriginal language programs and bringing Aboriginal ways of knowing into the curriculum. Aboriginal knowledge is not cultural artifacts and exotic imagery. Our ways of knowing, thinking and being are our culture, but they don't make good photographs and can't be owned by colonists, so they are generally ignored. I work to bring this deep knowledge into the designing of systems, rather than just leaving it in the margins where it is reduced to a cultural lapdance for the entertainment of the dominant culture. |
