My interests have always been wide, but when later in life I turned to writing as a career it was sports writing that I initially fell into.
I had always had an interest in rugby, cricket, and athletics, and although I scraped into both my high school first 11 Cricket and first 15 rugby teams it rapidly became clear I wasn’t destined for spectacular international success. The logical alternative was to pursue my interest in the sports by writing about them.
On the Internet I was the About.com Guide to Rugby and have written about a range of subjects from Shakespeare to pop music on various other sites.
I pursued an education for several years at both Canterbury University in my home town of Christchurch, New Zealand, and at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology without major damage to either myself or either of those worthy institutions. In theory I am knowledgeable about everything from post-modernist romantic poetry to some of the more arcane concepts of numerical mathematics (just don’t ask me anything about string theory or quantum mechanics).
Suite101 appealed because it gives an Internet writer an opportunity to focus on content while also receiving something of an education in Web writing and SEO.
