Sarah Baughman has taught English literature and writing to middle and high school students in Michigan, China, and Bolivia. With a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor's in English and German from Grinnell College, Sarah brings a strong educational and experiential background to Suite101's Education & Career page. She has worked to develop curriculum in growing schools and has taught a variety of classes, from remedial reading to Advanced Placement English Language and Literature. Sarah also built a journalism program for students at an international, American-curriculum-based school in Shanghai, China; the student newspaper she advised won a first place award from the American Scholastic Press Association.
Sarah's international teaching experience gives her a valuable cultural perspective that she works to share with students at the public charter school where she currently teaches in northern Michigan. Because Sarah speaks multiple languages and is certified to teach German as well as English, she feels comfortable working with students at all language levels and has taught ESL in addition to her other courses.
A strong passion for reading and writing fuels Sarah's teaching, and she works hard to maintain her skill level in these areas. For example, Sarah works as a volunteer writer for The Stewardship Network, an environmental non-profit organization, in addition to writing for Suite 101; her articles have been published in various ecological newsletters. She also belongs to the National Council of Teachers of English and writes poetry and non-fiction. Sarah looks forward to sharing her knowledge of education, international teaching, reading, writing, and travel with Suite 101 readers.
