Susan Hyde - Profile

Susan Hyde, SBH Freelance

I am a college English instructor, freelance writer, and homeschool mom to two wonderful boys, ages six and eight. After graduating from the University of California, Davis in 1991 with a major in English and a minor in Rhetoric and Communications, I went on to earn an M.Ed. in English Education at Mercer University in 1993.

Over the past fifteen years, I have taught composition and literature to students from the middle school to college level. I have also written state test items as a member of a taskforce for alternative assessment, crafted the Rhythmic Arts dance curriculum for the York County School of the Arts, and created climate surveys as a member of two School Improvement Committees. I have also served on a district committee serving Gifted and Talented students.

Writing has always been a passion. As a freelancer I have written and edited content for Healthy Moms Fitness (R) , and I was the Health Editor for The American Chesapeake Bulletin for several years. I have contributed multiple articles to Pregnancy Magazine and iparenting.com. I write the "Educating Mama" blog for the The Portland Press Herald's' new Raising Maine website and contribute articles to the associated mothering magazine. With more than fifteen years of teaching and writing experience behind me, I enjoy being a part of the Suite101 team.

I live with my husband, two sons, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and English Setter in an island town in Midcoast Maine. We enjoy dog training, boating, snowshoeing, and just about everything else that this beautiful part of the world has to offer!
