Freelance Writer Rosemary Gemmell, Philip Gemmell

A freelance writer for many years, Rosemary Gemmell's short stories and articles have been published in a variety of UK magazines. She also contributes to The Highlander Magazine in the US and has some articles on synergise.com. A little meditation was published in the January to June 2009 issue of The Upper Room devotional guide. She is now writing novel-length fiction for adults and children.

Children's Stories

Rosemary also writes occasional children's stories. One was published in November 2008, in the 'Making Changes' anthology, and in May another was published in a children's book, 'A Suitcase Full of Stories', both from Bridge House Publishing. Her third children's story will be published in November 2009.

Prizes and Writing-related Work

A few of Rosemary's stories have won prizes, including the Annual Love Story Competition in the UK Writing Magazine. She was awarded the Alistair Walker Trophy for a winning article at the Scottish Association of Writers Annual Conference and another year she won the Woman's Short Story Award. Other prizes include a short story competition in Freelance Market News and a regional poetry competition.

Rosemary gives talks on market research to local writing groups and adjudicates some of their competitions as she loves to help other writers be published. She is a member of her local writing group as well as the Scottish Association of Writers, the Scottish Fellowship of Christian Writers and the Society of Authors in Scotland.

Education and Interests

As a mature student, Rosemary gained a BA (honours) in European Literature, History and Culture, then a Masters in Humanities (Literature with British Cinema History). Her favourite interests include some of her researched subjects, such as literature of all kinds, history, music, art history, philosophy, Christianity and film.

She is also an experienced traveller and cruiser with her husband who is a professional in the travel business. Hobbies include nature, photography, travel, recipes and writing-related subjects. She is a committed member of her local Baptist Church.

Her home is in the beautiful west coast of Scotland, which she loves because of the changeable seasons, and the rain which keeps the hills so green.
