Recent Blog PostChristmas Birds – Decoration, Symbolism, and Food for the Table
I’m one of those extraordinarily lucky people who get to do what they love—and I love writing. I’ve been published many times as a nonfiction writer and several times as a poet. I currently have a book contract with the University of California Press for a natural and social history of parasites. A mixed educational background gives me the broad base of experience and knowledge that informs my writing. Trained in the 70's as a medical laboratory technologist, I enjoyed a career in clinical microbiology, mycology, and parasitology for many years. I went back to school as a part time student in my 30s and earned a BA, with a major in sociology and two minors: English, and peace and conflict studies. From that point on, I’ve focused mainly on writing. I've written for professional journals, trade publications, and consumer magazines on various topics, most of them involving some aspect of health or nature. My first article about birds, for 50Plus, was about the large numbers of Bald Eagles that gather on both the west and east coasts of Canada each winter (“The Eagle Has Landed.” Feb (2003): 40-43.) I am currently also writing birding itineraries for the travel website Itinerary Share. I come from a large family of bird watchers and write from a desk where I can view the activity at my birdfeeders throughout the day. Building the Birds page for Suite101 allows me to continually expand my knowledge of the subject using my personal experience, academic research skills, and scientific background. It’s a broad and exciting topic, including both wild and pet birds, and many environmental issues in which birds figure prominently. So much to write, so little time... |
