She was selected to attend her first Young Authors Conference in Whitehorse Yukon in 1985 based on a collection of poetry works she had composed throughout her high school years.
Intent on following in her parents' military footsteps, Colleens junior and senior high school extra cirricular activities focused on participating in local Cadet Unit training. She spent six years with the Royal Canadian Army Cadets and Air Cadets as a youth, and continued her military involvement with the Canadian Cadet Organization by becoming an Officer with the Cadet Instructors Cadre of the Canadian Reserve Force. She received her Queen's Commission in 1987. Colleen has since served in Supply, Administrative and Training positions in both Northern Area and Prairie Region, has been employed at Cadet Summer Training Centers and has served as the Commanding Officer in two Air Cadet Squadrons and one Army Cadet Corps.
Colleen spent her formative years living in the Yukon Territory and remained there until her first marriage. She has since lived in a variety of cities across western Canada, including military bases and small northern communities.
