Even for a day or two, a child in the workplace can be disruptive and cause resentment. Melissa is a freelance writer in Hawaii who has held a number of jobs to keep food on the table (38, to be exact). Experience spans everything from teaching dance to selling knives door to door. She has published a number of articles and short stories, and has seen her plays produced nationwide. Profile: I'm an award-winning playwright with a degree in theatre from the University of Washington, currently shopping my latest novel manuscript. Day jobs have led me through a variety of work adventures, which include discovering a filing cabinet full of dog crap, being threatened by witchcraft, and watching a friend get hauled off in handcuffs after she stole $150,000 from a client. And she was my carpool home. Though some will feel that 38 jobs is nothing to brag about, most have been temp jobs or part-time positions worked concurrently. Having experienced so many environments and witnessing what works and what doesn’t, I feel qualified on the topic of Workplace Culture. Additionally, my expertise encompasses job searches, interviews, resumes, and personal communication. I've recently taken a hiatus from day jobs to tackle the biggest job of all--Ruby, born May 22nd, 2007. My second is on the way, due in Septemer 2008. When I'm not buried in diapers, I travel the world on a shoe-string budget, sing and dance in local theatre productions, and annoy my husband Paul with stupid jokes that only I find funny. |
