I've been gardening in some fashion since the 1960s, in zones from California to New York. I realized I wanted to make it my work, as well as my hobby, when I found myself reading gardening magazines on my way to and from my desk job in computer development. I started with an herb gardening business called "MAI Thyme" and moved on to selling heirloom vegetable seedlings back when they were still hard to come by.

Eventually I realized that by writing and talking about gardening, I had the perfect excuse for stopping at every nursery and public garden I came across. I started writing a local garden guide and branched out to writing for heirloom and other gardening publications.

I particularly enjoy my work with the Master Gardener Program and community gardening projects. I think I learn the most when I'm working with other gardeners. I worked for a time for Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Ulster County, as the Community Gardening Program Educator. Although I spend my time now writing and talking about gardening, I still enjoy volunteering with Extension

I'm looking forward to sharing 'the dark side of gardening' with you at Gardening Q & A Writer: pests, blight, fungus, deer and plants that just don't do what the books promise. I'll be posting some gardening wisdom I've learned in the trenches and I'm hoping you'll all be sending in your specific questions and tips, so we can all keep learning and making our gardens more spectacular and our gardening more fun.
