Mary Williams is a versatile writer, copyeditor and visual artist with many years experience in the arts and humanities.
Mary has lived, worked and traveled extensively throughout Canada and is especially knowledgeable about the places, people, and culture of the east coast. She is presently writing travel articles about Newfoundland and Labrador for Suite101 in her spare time and is at work on a pictorial guide to Southwest Newfoundland.
Chief amongst her works in progress is a collection of poetry and visual fine art in collaboration with Canadian poet and Vallum Magazine editor Helen Zisimatos. She is also presently at work on a biographical non-fiction manuscript.
Mary is currently the administrator of Encounter Newfoundland, an upcoming site dedicated to introducing newcomers to the beauty and wonder of Newfoundland from a personal perspective, providing insight to those facets of the island that otherwise may go unnoticed and unexplored by visitors to the province. She also maintains View from the Hill, an ongoing recounting of her homesteading misadventures on the Rock, sharing healthy/frugal/sustainable/compassionate living ideas as well as addressing issues of concern to virtual freelancers.
When not pursuing her own literary and design projects, Mary's freelance business sees her tackling projects in a range of fields, from content management to copyediting, software verification to site design and administration.
Her professional experience runs the gamut from editing academic research in the fields of Economics, Psychology, Business, Music, English, Anthropology and Geology, to work as Assistant Editor for one of the country’s leading-edge literary magazines. She has freelanced for a regional, Atlantic-based newspaper, where she authored human interest articles and reported on local events, and has published web reviews and interest-specific articles in several online publications.
As a copywriter/designer, she has produced web sites, promotional copy, and other company literature for small businesses, and has provided vital correspondence services to both businesses and individuals...including a letter of complaint to the Queen!
Mary holds both Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in English, along with a passion for photography that lends itself well to her travel writing and design.
