Laura Webb
Contributing Writer
Hello fellow writers my name is Laura and I'm very excited to become a suite101 contributing writer. Here's some info about me:
I have two degrees:
- MA in Journalism (includes NCTJ Preliminary Certificate and shorthand) at Kingston University London
- BA Hons in Film & Media Studies and French, 2:1 (includes 6 months study at L'Universite de Francois Rabelais in Tours, France) at The University of Stirling (in Scotland)
I have worked at a range of print and online newspapers and magazines:
- BusyGirlsGuide.co.uk - I currently write freelance for this online women's magazine. So far I have written articles in eco-fashion, beauty, city guides and restaurant reviews. I am being sent to the Rigby and Peller press day in Hanover Square, London on behalf of Busy Girls next month, which I'm very excited about (July 09 - present day).
- ThreeWeeks - This is the leading publication at The Edinburgh Festival. I worked as an arts reviewer for ThreeWeeks throughout the festival this year, reviewing comedy, theatre, physical theatre, dance, musicals, rock music and events (August 09).
- mydeco.com - I did a two-week work placement at this online interior design magazine based in Notting Hill, writing articles on current style trends and top ten lists (June 09).
- RiverOnline - This is Kingston University's online newspaper. I was the Student Life editor, compiling weekly news lists and commisioning articles. I also wrote several articles including news, political and crime stories; features; film, music, theatre, pub and restaurant reviews. I was also the first to upload a video onto the site, which I filmed, edited and starred in (September 09 - May 09).
- The Daily Express, The Daily Star, Ok! Magazine - I worked on the web desk for these publications for a week. I wrote several 'odd news' stories for all three sites and made celeb photo galleries for Sandra Bullock and Kim Cattrall (April 09).
- The Independent on Sunday - I worked on the news and features desk for two weeks, researching top news stories such as President Obama's inauguration, Tony Blair's Presidential Medal of Freedom and lead poisoning in Senegal. My cuttings were of information regarding Obama's inauguration (January 09).
- Brig - This is The University of Stirling's student newspaper. I wrote several articles including news stories; music and film reviews (Oct 06 - May 07).
- The Hastings & St. Leonards Observer - I worked as a reporter at my local paper on three separate occasions, attending court hearings and accompanying photographers on shoot. On the last placement, I got an average of 10 articles printed per week. The editor awarded me £100 for the outstanding contribution I made to the paper at a time when it was under-staffed (June 05).
I love writing about lots of different things, but am especially interested in film & tv, popular culture, media debates, politics, media law, fashion, beauty, food & drink and music. Hopefully I will add to this list as a suite101 writer.
