Lao Shir (Venerated Teacher, Mandarin Chinese) Cynthia Ming was born in the Bronx, New York in 1955. She has been studying and teaching the martial arts, dance and fitness since she was fourteen.
She attended The Beijing Institiute for Physical Education and The Beijing Sport and Cultural School and received certifications from the Grandmasters there in Wushu, Tai Chi and sport conditioning.
She has served on the faculties of The New York Open Center, The New School for Social Research and Columbia University's Alternatives Adult Education.
While living in New York City, she also worked as a commercial print model and actor.
She appeared in the national publications Joe Weider's Flex, Inside Kung Fu and was a featured writer and the Martial Arts Editor for New York Bodies. Her television appearances have included Alive and Wellness with Carol Martin, The Natural Health Show with Mary Mucci, Prevention and Fox News On Health. She was the co-host and segment producer of the MSG cable TV show Martial Art World.
Her most notorious appearance as an actor was her portrayal of a sword fighter in the heavy metal band Motley Crue's video, "Too Young To Fall In Love."
One of her more memorable print campaigns was for UPS, where she portrayed a track runner with an Olympic torch. In the final print ad, she held the actual 1956 Olympic torch.
From 2004-2008, she served as a guest motivational speaker for selected student sections at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Tappan, New York.
Presently, she serves as the Director of Cynthia Ming's Tai Chi Fitness in Nyack, Rockland County, NY. The School offers a world class curriculum of Tai Chi and Qi Gong integrated with a Gentle Pilates/ YogaStretch. Contemporary Wushu, strength training, flexibilty and endurance training are also available to groups and private clients of all levels and capabilities. She continues to provide workshops and seminars on the benefits of healthy living.
Her specialty is modifying movements so anyone can achieve success in developing their ultimate human movement potential.
She lives inspired by the words of U.S. author and lecturer, Helen Keller, who was born blind and deaf since infancy, "Your success and happiness lie in you."
