Kah Ying Choo

Formerly an academic researcher in the U.S. for eight years, I am a writer/educator and a homeschooler of Sebastien, my 12-year-old autistic son. I am also a former sufferer of manic depression who has recovered from my condition after a challenging 15-year journey. Rising above the odds, I have combined my academic training and work with my life experiences into inspirational and practical books and workshops. Since my return to Singapore in August 2005, I have published articles on raising and educating autistic children in the local newspapers such as The Straits Times and Today, as well as magazines in Singapore such as Today's Parents and Shape, and Otherways, a magazine on homeschooling from Australia. I am also the author of a self-published picture book, All Because of the Hummingbird or the Horse, a parent training manual with a heart, Raising Sebastien: Realising Your Autistic Child’s Potential (Marshall Cavendish) and a book on my recovery from manic-depression, Five Little White Pills… and Then There Were None: A Journey from Manic Depression to Recovery (Armour Publishing). My other endeavors include: workshops and consultations for parents and teachers regarding autism and other special needs. I have created a new company called Awakening Minds to empower and educate individuals with special needs/mental illesses, caregivers, professionals and the general public.
