Joy joined Suite in September 2005 on the heels of 14 blissful years in the Canadian book publishing industry editing award-wining fiction by Canadian literary talents (household names? not yet, but worthy). After editing over 80 titles for ECW, Raincoast, Beach Holme and Quarry presses she traded in far too many near-sighted nights pouring over manuscripts for even more staring at a monitor.
When she wasn't reading books, she was talking about them or reviewing them as a literary journalist for Canada's CBC, the Globe & Mail, Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen and Quarry and Arc literary magazines. She is currently the Acquisitions and Commissioning Editor at Room magazine. She also hosted Bravo!'s show "The Letters" for one season.
Passionate about making new converts to the printed word, she also teaches editing at Simon Fraser University (where she will hopefully soon graduate with a PhD) and Ryerson University. She zealously takes her brand of cultural nationalism to national and provincial boards, juries, festivals, committees and to heart.
In 2001 she founded the Canadian Children's Book Camp for 11-14 similarly obsessed young adults, now indoctrinating 100s annually in Vancouver and Toronto. She is on the Board of the Red Cedar Award, which gives 15,000 young adults the opportunity to vote for their favourite BC author from a list of nominees each year.
When not reading or writing, she exercises something besides her mind by doing yoga, hiking , jumping at the slightest excuse to globetrot, or hunkering down in the back row of a cinema to devour indie flicks.
Having been born in Nepal and lived in nearly 30 homes and 10 cities, she's glad to finally plug-in her laptop in her beloved Vancouver and read about what's going on in the world. Care to join her?
