I am a systems ecologist with over 20 years experience primarily in the sustainable management of fisheries and aquatic resources. I hold B.Sc. (ecology) and Master of Resource Management (MRM) degrees and am also a Registered Professional Biologist with the Association of Professional Biologists of British Columbia. My expertise is the support of science-based decision processes through multi-stakeholder facilitation, the design of adaptive management experiments and monitoring programs, multi-criteria decision analysis, simulation modeling, and the analysis and communication of scientific data. As a result,I do a tremendous amount of writing, ranging from scientific articles destined for peer reviewed journals like the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, to technical and summary reports meant for busy decision-makers. My environmental writing moves beyond fisheries issues to explore the many fascinating and unexpected connections between the natural and human components of ecosystems. I cover topics like sustainable agriculture, biofuels, geoengineering, colony collapse disorder, climate change and the details of living sustainable lifestyles. As a Contributing Writer for Suite101, I’ll bring my scientific expertise and real life experiences to bear on the broad topic of science and its role in sustainable resource management. You can find out more about my writing on my blog, “What’s Your Ecotype?”. |
