Heidi Smith - Profile

The joy of working from home . . . , Heidi Smith

As the Editor-in-Chief of SuperConsciousness Magazine, I get paid to interview amazing people - and write about them. After years of teaching English and history to everyone from middle schoolers to university students to downsized Boeing engineers, I decided to follow my own advice and start writing full time. My work has appeared in SC Magazine, The Golden Thread, and Scienza e Conoscenza (in Italian, no less! Too bad I couldn't read it). I am currently working on a pair of children's books about an excessively polite pirate and a vegetarian dragon.

At one point I seriously considered becoming a professional soccer player, a dream that was deferred by a) the complete lack of a professional women's league and b) the fact that I wasn't that good. Today, I keep my hand in by watching the World Cup every four years. As an avid hiker and backpacker, I am also interested in all things environmental, as well as historical, political, scientific, sociological, etc. A perk of my job involves interviewing famous explorers (thank you, Reinhold Messner!) as well as creative people like actors (Harry Shearer) and journalists (Amy Goodman).

For the past ten years I have taught hundreds of immigrants and visiting students from around the globe, in addition to traveling to 23 countries myself. I like to think that I bring an international perspective to whatever I write.
