Henry Berry, Suite101 Contributing Writer, Henry Berry

For more than 20 years, I have been self-employed in the interrelated fields of writing and publishing. Over this time, I have done work as a freelance writer and editor, creative writing teacher, publishing consultant, ghostwriter, literary agent, book/author publicist, and book reviewer. For nearly 20 years I published the Small Press Book Review, first as a print periodical and starting in about 2001 as an electronic periodical. My book reviewing at this time is concentrated on nonfiction works in fields such as history, biography, and literary criticism from university presses and arts and antiques books. For more than 5 years, I have been regularly reviewing business books published by the the Beard Group, a business-services organization based in Frederick, Maryland.

In 2001, I published THE PROGRESS OF MODERNITY - FROM REVOLUTION TO FADS through iUniverse. For the past few years I have been working on two books-in-progress with the working titles THE REFUGE OF SURFACES - A POSTMODERN ODYSSEY, and secondly SIFTING THE HOURS - DISCOVERIES AND RECOVERIES. Other writing activities include editing parts of the published books THE WANDERING IRISH IN EUROPE - THEIR INFLUENCE FROM THE DARK AGES TO MODERN TIMES and editorial development of WHEN CORPORATIONS RULE THE WORLD. I am cited by name in the author's preface in each of these works. I also did ghostwriting for a business book by a leading realtor in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and am listed in Literary Marketplace in the publishing consultant and book reviewing sections. Much of my activity in the writing and publising fields has been with small presses, independent publishers, and self-published authors. For over 10 years, I have been a judge of the annual Ben Franklin book awards for outstanding books in many fields given by the Publishers' Marketing Association (PMA). At one time I was on the Board of Directors of COSMEP (Committee of Small Magazine Publishers and Editors), and wrote a monthly column for its newsletter on book marketing and promotion, social and industry trends, and other topics of interest to publishers. My undergraduate degree is in philosophy/English from Fairfield University in Connecticut; and I have a graduate degree in philosophy from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

In addition to my work in the writing and publishing fields, I've also been active in the antiques and auctions field for over 10 years, mostly in the area of antiquarian books, maps, prints, posters, photographs, and ephemera. I collect and purchase items for resale by frequently going to estate sales and auctions throughout New England and nearby states; and I also regularly consign items to Fairfield County auctions. I sell on ebay too under the user ID henryberry. Under the name Connecticut Book Auctions, I occasionally help auction houses to organize, promote, and run auctions for books and related items. My involvement as a self-employed/independent dealer in this field of collecting and selling books, maps, and other historical and cultural items ties in with my subject interests in the field of writing and publishing.
