There's nothing quite like being a freelance writer. Working in my pajamas at 2 a.m. and then spending the next afternoon lounging on my back porch with my dogs in the sunshine because I got all my work done the night before. Traveling when I want. Learning something new every single day. Not having to get up at 7 a.m. and sit in rush hour traffic. I've got it kush, big time, and trust me when I say I don't take one minute for granted!
Ever since I was a little girl words have held a certain pull on my imagination, so it's pretty natural that I grew up and turned into a writer (despite the dire warnings that I'd be living on crusty bread every month and scraping to pay the rent...what can I say? I'm just stubborn.)
I was, and still am, an avid reader, and the thousands of books I have devoured during my life have all had an influence on me both as a person and as a writer. I've traveled through Africa during the dry season so thirsty you think you're going crazy, lived the life of a beggar woman on the Paris streets in the late 1800's, been a gangly 10 year old girl struggling to go to school in 1912 Brooklyn, gone through a Montana winter in an unheated cabin as the winds howled down from Canada...it's all happened to me through books, and as a result I feel I've lived many more lives than just my own. All of this has led to me as a writer now, in this moment, and I'm grateful.
I have been freelancing over 7 years now and I'm not being cheezy when I say I've loved (almost) every minute of it. Words have the power to educate people, to make them laugh, or to change their minds. They can inspire, or devastate, and sell one product or a million. Words are amazing to me, and I'm so blessed to do what I do everyday. I fell into this life by grace, and it doesn't matter if I'm writing copy for a brochure or articles for education, I love it!
