Steve (Gunnar S.) Paulsson is a professional writer and semi-retired academic. His book, Secret City: The Hidden Jews of Warsaw 1940-1945 (Yale, 2002) was the recipient (before publication) of the Fraenkel Prize for Contempoorary History for the "best unpublished manuscript in a field of interest to the Institute of Contemporary History" and the Polish Studies Association Prize in 2004 for "the best first book in English on any aspect of Polish affairs published int he past two years". Two of his articles have been included in an anthology of "the most significant articles on the Holocaust published in the past.

He has a D.Phil. from Oxford (1998) and was a Commonwealth Scholar. He has held seven scholarships and fellowships. He has seven years of university teaching experience, including three at Oxford, and was Senior Historian of the Holocaust Exhibition Project Office at the Imperial War Museum, London, 1998-2000, writing and/or editing all texts connected with the exhibition, including film scripts and the exhibition guidebook. He has been working as a freelance writer since then.
